Choosing the right glass door pull handle is not only about selecting a design that looks good. For a clean installation, the dimensions must work with the door, the glass drilling and the overall scale of the entrance.
For most architectural glass door applications, two measurements matter more than anything else:
Overall Length
andCenter-to-Center Distance (CTC).
Understanding the difference between them can prevent ordering mistakes, installation problems and unnecessary glass rework.
What Is Overall Length?
Overall Length is the complete end-to-end length of the pull handle.
For example, a pull may have an overall length of:
- 24"
- 36"
- 48"
- 60"
- 72"
This measurement determines how much visual presence the handle has on the door.
A longer pull usually creates a stronger architectural effect, particularly on large commercial entrances, hotel doors and luxury residential glass doors.
What Does CTC Mean?
CTC stands for:
Center-to-Center
It refers to the distance between the center points of the two mounting holes.
This is one of the most important dimensions when selecting a pull handle for glass.
A handle may have:
These are not the same measurement.
The handle extends beyond the mounting points at the top and bottom.
Why CTC Matters So Much for Glass Doors
Unlike wood or metal doors, tempered glass usually cannot be drilled after tempering.
If the glass has already been produced, the mounting holes are fixed.
That means the new pull handle must match the existing CTC accurately.
If the handle is ordered with the wrong mounting distance, it may not be possible to install it without replacing the glass.
This is why we always recommend confirming the CTC before ordering.
Common North American Size Combinations
For commercial and architectural applications, several size combinations are commonly used because they offer practical installation and visually balanced proportions.
Typical combinations include:
| Overall Length | CTC |
|---|---|
| 24" / 610 mm | 12" / 305 mm |
| 36" / 914 mm | 24" / 610 mm |
| 48" / 1219 mm | 36" / 914 mm |
| 60" / 1524 mm | 48" / 1219 mm |
| 72" / 1829 mm | 60" / 1524 mm |
At FORM & HOLD, we prefer to offer clear, pre-defined size combinations rather than allowing every measurement to be selected independently.
This reduces ordering errors and gives each handle a more consistent architectural proportion.
Which Size Should You Choose?
There is no single correct size for every door.
The right choice depends on:
- Door height and width
- Existing glass drilling
- Residential or commercial application
- Desired visual proportion
- Handle diameter
- Overall architectural style
For smaller office or interior glass doors, a 24" pull may be appropriate.
For many commercial entrances, a 36" pull with 24" CTC provides a balanced and familiar proportion.
For hotels, luxury retail spaces and larger entrance doors, a 48" or 60" pull creates a stronger visual presence.
If the Glass Is Already Drilled
Always measure the existing mounting holes first.
Measure directly from:
center of the upper hole → center of the lower hole
Do not measure from the edges of the holes.
This measurement is your CTC.
Once CTC has been confirmed, select a compatible handle.
If the Glass Has Not Been Produced Yet
We recommend selecting the handle before the final glass drilling.
This allows the handle dimensions, mounting details and glass hole positions to be confirmed before tempering.
For larger projects, this can also reduce installation inconsistencies across multiple doors.
Why FORM & HOLD Uses Fixed Size Combinations
A pull handle is both a functional product and an architectural object.
Its proportions matter.
By pairing overall length and CTC into carefully selected combinations, we can provide:
- More consistent visual proportions
- Easier specification
- Easier inventory management
- Reduced ordering errors
- More predictable installation
A Practical Starting Point
For many North American projects, two of the most versatile combinations are:
36" Overall / 24" CTC
48" Overall / 36" CTC
For smaller or oversized applications, additional sizes are available.
If your project requires a non-standard mounting distance, unusual glass dimensions or a custom configuration, FORM & HOLD can also provide project-specific support.
